Although, on the advice of my therapist, I do not
participate any more, the memories remain vivid.
The month of planning, marking the calendar, counting down
the hours. Deciding whether or not to use a coveted sick day for the sake of
being there when the doors open. The anxiety the night before, the alarm (what if it doesn’t go off???) set for
5:00 a.m., the panic as I see my neighbor backing out of her driveway while I’m
still brushing my teeth.
Thinking maybe I should
have jeopardized my credit score just to be one of “The Insiders” who was “allowed”
to catch a glimpse of what’s behind those
curtains and “allowed” to drop a mortgage payment on the trends that maybe just might complete me.
Maybe.
Yep, it’s time yet again for THAT sale at THAT store.
The sale that screams to the masses, coaxing them to awaken at 5:00 a.m (or earlier if a latte stop is on the pre-sale itinerary) on a gorgeous July day, tap into patience usually reserved for saints
as they circle the parking lot, expose their knickers and their knockers to total
strangers in a community dressing room (they really know how to maximize their
investment in those bloody curtains, eh?), and, head throbbing and feet aching,
end their morning by spending 30 minutes in the soup line for a cuppa’tomato and
a “complimentary” crostini.
All this to snag those “exclusives”. The ones that are available in 10 sizes and eight colors in each and every one of their 100+ stores nationwide.
Far be it from me to ignore the value in stocking up on foundational pieces at a rarely seen price point (think Paige, Hanky Panky, and perhaps those Theory slim legs). Just keep in mind that “I love your boots. I
bought them in both colors...” is not
really a compliment come October. And that the good stuff for the Fall season is
being carefully guarded and saved for later … behind the curtains!
