I
stand before you today, hand raised, palm reaching skyward, and hereby proclamate that skinny jeans are over!(ok,
maybe I’m more exclamating than proclamating, but anyhoo…).
It’s been a prolonged process and we’ve tried not to pull
the plug prematurely, but when I see soccer moms trying to be rocker moms,
their carefully overstyled Kingston-esque tots in tow sporting teeny skinnies, their wish-I-still had-my-skateboard-and-my 6-string hubbies trying to rock the
manskinnies, it’s time to call it. Unless you’re Mick. Which you’re not.
Not to say that skinnies don’t have their place. No ma'am.
Nothing else will tuck into tall boots
efficiently (stay tuned for the fall update during which I will announce time
of death for that tired trend as well), they're certainly tunic-friendly ('nuff said?), so no reason skinnies can't still be one option in
the armoire. Personally, the risk of muffin top and the dreaded pancake ass
outweigh the benefits, but that’s just me and my body speaking
Don’t get me wrong. We all love us some denim. What other fabric can survive urban life,
suburban life, campus life, life in general AND is easy peasy, no-iron, no -wash (before you say “ewwwww”, admit it …
you’ve been known to push it one extra day), seasonless, affordable, and socially acceptable to boot?
Our sartorial soulmate, so to speak.
But c’mon people, there are so many interesting
incarnations of our fave fabric out there that are being ignored for the sake
of conformity. Or for the sake of trying to be what we
think is cool.
Truth is, when something becomes so mainstream that it has a
single-word moniker (are you listening Snookie? Britney? Ma-don-na?), the sixteenth minute is already looming.
